To Infinity and Beyond!

My sister told me about NASA’s amazing Twitter account that not only keeps you up to date on NASA news but also circulates an ‘image of the day’ (#iotd).  These include satellite images of the earth, moon and beyond – introducing us to parts of the universe that we have never seen before, while showing familiar phenomena in a whole new light.  For example, the above image of August’s tropical storm gathering energy over the Atlantic Ocean in 2011.

This particular photo blew my mind.  This orbital panorama shot, taken in 1984, captures Bruce McCandless, ‘free flying’ 320 feet away from his spaceship, thanks to what NASA call a ‘Manned Manoeuvring Unit’, but to the rest of us is a jetpack.  This is the furthest distance that an astronaut has ever travelled from the safety of his ship and we get to see it!  Amazing!
